New Zealand Coins

New Zealand Coins

In the early 1800s, numerous currencies from the around the world were traded in New Zealand, including Pieces of Eight. In 1840 the first Governor of New Zealand extended British laws to New Zealand allowing the standard gold, silver and bronze British coins to circulate in New Zealand. British coins were made legal tender in New Zealand in 1858, although Australian minted gold sovereign and half sovereign coins were also in circulation.
In 1933, a distinctive New Zealand coinage was introduced using the same weights, sizes and denominations as the British coins. On 1 February 1935, British coins ceased to be legal tender. New Zealand had became the last and most remote of the self-governing dominions of the British Commonwealth to introduce its own coinage.
Decimal coinage was introduced into circulation in 1967. The ‘heads’ design featuring the Queen’s portrait was updated in 1986 and again in 1999, and in 1990 a new 20 cent piece was introduced. The following year $1 and $2 coins replaced the $1 and $2 notes. The New Zealand 10, 20 and 50 cent coins were made from solid cupro-nickel until 2006 and the introduction of smaller and lighter coins made of plated steel, the new ten cent coin was changed to copper coloured and the 5 cent coin was withdrawn from circulation.
