THE MAGIC OF MATCHBOX CARS

  Dear Chatelaine's Antiques,
I grew up playing with Matchbox cars, none of which I have anymore. I noticed recently that eBay has almost 7,000 Matchbox auctions at any one time, some of them for multiple cars. In terms of toys and other collectibles etc., are Matchbox cars considered a popular collectible?

Also, do you know of any groups and/or publications that I can consult about them?
M. T.

Matchbox car

Dear M.T.,
Matchbox cars have been all the rage ever since they rolled out in 1953. And with the rising interest in boomerabilia generally, they're as popular as ever.

Baby Boomers who played with Matchbox cars as children are now seeking them out and they're selling well on eBay. I've seen several cars go for $20, $30, even $40.

Like everything else, Matchbox cars in better condition are more valuable. That's one reason the prices are so high.

The best ones are still in their original box, but if every child kept them in the box they wouldn't command these prices.

The two most respected publications on Matchbox are:
Matchbox Toys 1947 to 1998: Identification & Value Guide
by Dana Johnson, and
Collecting Matchbox*t Regular Wheels, 1953-1969
 by Charles Mack
