Lord Robert Baden Powell
Two Lives of a Hero is the Authentic Biography of B-P.
Baden - Powell: The Two Lives of a Hero is perhaps "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt's
greatest work. Hillcourt, who wrote nearly all of BSA's Handbooks over the years and was
instrumental in bringing Wood Badge over to the United States was perhaps America's most
endearing and noted Scouters.
This book is, even today, required reading at many Wood Badge courses.
Baden-Powell kept detailed notes throughout his life, including letters to his family and
wife. Lady Baden-Powell worked with Hillcourt to complete this riveting and
detailed account that will thrill any veteran Scouter or Scout interested in the origins
of Scouting around the world and in the United States.
Hillcourt recounts Robert Baden-Powell from his youth in Great Britian at Charterhouse
School. His enlisting as an officer in the British Army and his exploits and
adventures in Africa, India, and other postings around the world.
As the Boer War entered the critical stage in South Africa, Baden-Powell used his
"Scouting" resources and skills to hold out for 217 days against a vastly
superior force. Upon return to England he was a national hero.
Having had a full and honored career in the Army B-P was still troubled by the condition
of youth in England. He set about outlining a scheme called "Scouting For
Boys" which he wrote about in 1908. The rest is history, the program
swept the British Empire by storm and B-P launched his second "life" that of
founder and tireless supporter of the Boy Scout Movement.
This book has been in print for decades and has been translated into many languages so
scouts worldwide can learn about the founder of Scouting.
One of The Great All Time Books. This book is rated for
readers from ages 9 to 12. It deserves reading for readers up to and over age 100.
More than just a book on the outdoors a good book for how to live
life. The book contains, as one might expect, valuable information about
camping, starting fires, signaling, how to find your way out of the woods and why it is a
virtue to help old ladies accross the street.
But it also contains far more fundamental and important information about why our country
is great. What it means to be a man of character. Why we should
understand and defend the rights of others and not only ourselves. Why we
should help and defend the weak. Why we should respect the creation that God
has given us as a gift. In short - what it means to be a responsible human
being.
