US Army's Special Forces

Great photography- a fascinating & informative book.
David Bohrer's photographs of the Special Forces are incredible- especially his pictures of the Navy Seals which are my favorite.  He really takes you in and makes you feel you there with these elite fighters.  In addition to the superb photography, the book is very interesting and informative.   Definitely five stars!
If you're interested in Special Forces, this is your book. It's got more information on training and mission tasking than I've found in any other book on this subject.  Each of the teams are detailed in depth.  It's obvious the author got some pretty good access.    A good, interesting read.
Aside from those reviews that claim "OH MY GOSH!  I knew NOTHING about this and now its like an expert!!!", most of the reviews are pretty decent.  So I decided to write a good review.  First off the good.  The info in this book is very good and the photos are stunning. The bad.  Not a lot of information on weapons and/or training.  I was slightly disappointed.  The ugly: None of it was ugly
Worth getting...
Wow!  The photos in this book are awesome!  The author takes the reader into the heart of America's Special Forces.  Page after page illustrates the power and expertise of our country's premier fighting forces.  Well written and informative, I bought several to give as gifts as well as for my coffee table.

Simons is uniquely qualified to study the U.S. Army Special Forces (who may wear them but do not like to be called green berets), for she is a professional anthropologist and the wife of a Special Forces sergeant.   And hers is a unique and excellent book that focuses less on the history and combat achievements of the Special Forces than on their current personnel selection, training, corporate culture, internal politics, and relations with an army bureaucracy predominated by downsizing and conventionality.  It is full of memorable personal portraits (including those of wives) that demonstrate that "male bonding" is not just a phrase, and it argues persuasively for keeping the emphasis of Special Forces missions the training of foreign soldiers rather than firefights.  Although some background knowledge of both military history and anthropology will make reading the whole book more rewarding, Simons' unusual set of insights into the world and people of special operations is invaluable.  Roland Green

No one doubts the abilities of Special Operations Forces (SOF) after Desert Storm.  But their impressive accomplishments are rooted in the lessons learned from Vietnam, Iran, Grenada, El Salvador, and Panama.   AT THE HURRICANE'S EYE is the first book to take an unflinching look at SOF's growth since Vietnam.  Author Greg Walker, with sixteen years of U.S. Army special operations experience as a ground operator, provides information and eyewitness acounts never before reported, from the tragic raid on Panama's Paitilla airfield to the first insider accounts of Special Forces, Marine Force Recon, and NAVY SEAL operations before and during Desert Storm.
No one can doubt the abilities of Special Operations Forces after Desert Storm. Whether it was coalition training, close air support, ground action, or reconnaissance behind the lines, these highly motivated professionals delivered.  Now a 16-year Special Operations veteran takes an unflinching look at the SOF's triumphs and tragedies.  Original.  (Military History)
Looks at the Special Operations Forces' growth since Vietnam, providing information and eyewitness accounts of such events as their raid on Panama and operations during the war in the Persian Gulf.  Original.

This is the book Stephen Ambrose called "a splendid history of U.S. Special Operations Forces...a pathbreaking work. Military history at its very best."  For four decades after World War II, U.S. Special Operations Forces --including Army Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Air Force special operations aircrews, and Special Tactics Group -- suffered from mistrust and inadequate funding from the military services.  They were nearly eliminated from the active force following the Vietnam War.   But in the past fifteen years, special operations forces have risen from the ashes of the failed 1980 rescue of American hostages in Iran to become one of the most frequently deployed elements of the U.S. military.  They are now adequately funded, better equipped, and well trained.  Special operations forces are often the nation's first military response to a crisis in today's uncertain and unstable international security environment.  What caused this dramatic turnaround?  As this book shows, it was a long way from congressional outrage at TV images of burned bodies of U.S. servicemen in the Iranian desert to the establishment of a special operations force of nearly 45,000 active and reserve personnel.  The drama of how this happened sheds light on how public policy is made and implemented.  It illustrates the complex interaction among internal forces within the special operations community and between the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government.  The implementation of legislation establishing a special operations capability is seen to rebuild and protect these forces to an extent never imagined by the early "quiet professionals."   While offering insights into how the U.S. government makes policy, Susan Marquis also gives a revealing look at the special operations community, including its storied past, the extreme training, and the recent operational experience that continues to forge its distinctive organizational mission and culture.  She describes the decade-long struggle to rebuild special operations forces, resulting in new SOF organizations with independence that is unique among U.S. military forces, an independence approaching that of a new military service.
